Kinds of sentences
Kinds of sentences are nothing but the mood or the way of expressing our thoughts into a sentence. While speaking, we express our feelings in various moods.
Sentences are of 4 kinds, they are:
- Assertive/ Declarative sentence
- Interrogative sentence
- Imperative sentence
- Exclamatory sentence
Let us understand each kind in detail.
- Assertive/ Declarative sentence: A general sentence that makes the statement normal, positive and simple is called an Assertive sentence. It can also be called as Declarative sentence.
- Interrogative sentence: A sentence that asks a question, whether it be positive or negative, is called an Interrogative sentence.
- Imperative sentence: A sentence that expresses an order or a request is called an Imperative sentence.
- Exclamatory sentence: A sentence that expresses a strong and sudden feeling or a reaction is called an Exclamatory sentence.
Let us have a look at the examples of each kind.
- Assertive/ Declarative sentence:
(i) It is raining heavily.
(ii) Rahul has visited many countries.
(iii) My mother went to a grocery shop.
(i) When are you coming to Bangalore?
(ii) You live in Chennai, don’t you?
(iii) What is the time?
(i) Please give me your book.
(ii) Sit down.
(iii) Get me a glass of water.
(i) Hurray! We won the match.
(ii) How beautiful the flower is!
(iii) Oh! The dog is no more.
